ALAN EVANS THE PRINCE OF WALES
By John Lowe, Jun 30 2015 10:28AM
Received a few messages recently asking about Alan Evans the fiery but competitive Wesh player many regarded the world number 1 in the early 70's. Alan died in 1999 at the age of 49, he had been suffering with bad health for a number of years, I am sure Alan would have been able to step up to the plate with the modern era of players, the first world championship at Nottingham produced a semi-final between alan and his good friend Leighton Rees that produced a spot of magic, Alan had opened the match with a maximum and at 2-2 it was evenly matched, then Leighton produced this: 137-180-180 D2, a 10 dart leg,the least ever shown on TV at that time and remember the board had big round wires and loads of staples, it remained the record until 1984, Leighton won the match and proceeded to the bar where he smoked a large cigar and downed more than a few Lagers in celebration, Alan approached and cooly said "Leighten Pickfords have just called they are interested in being your transport" Pickfords are a house moving company in the UK, Leighton replied "So you didn't buy me a present for beating you" Yes, "I bought you a waterbed, Lake Windermere" that was Alan's humour, sharp just like his darts.
