LEWIS NINE OVER AND OUT
By John Lowe, Dec 31 2014 09:44AM
Adrian Lewis hit a perfect 9 dart leg at Ally Pally to win the first set in his match against Barney, many thought that would determine the outcome of the match which for Lewis went terribly wrong. Barney leveled at 1-1 again at 2-2 and yet again at 3-3, the deciding set was tense Lewis taking the first leg, then fell away to let Barney take the next 3 legs and the victory, Lewis will look back on this match as the one he hit a 9 dart leg then gave the match away, which he certainly did, Barney will thank, as he did on stage his lucky stars.
Dean winstanley battled from 2-0 down against Vincent van der Voort and at one stage looked like he was taking control of the match, the sixth set was for his taking but he missed tops and Van der Voort took out double 10 to move him into the top 8.
Phil Taylor said he would stop Kim Huybrechts jummping around on the stage, well he did but it took him 7 sets do it and with Huybrechts sitting on 36 to win the match he had to take out double 10 to stay alive and take the match to the 7th set, this was when form deserted Huybrechts and Taylors experience came into play, Taylor won the set 3-0 and booked a place in the quarter finals and a step nearer to gaining his 17th world crown.
Stephen Bunting did not need telling he had a game on his hands with Michael Smith, they have know each other for a long time, Bunting does not fear reputations and came out firing big scores, set 1, 2 and 3 went to Bunting with Smith labouring to find his form, Smith started to play like we know he can in the 4th set and with some magical finishing takes the set and the next, Bunting takes out 81 for a 12 darter in the first leg of the 6th set, Smith follows with a 161 out to level, then Bunting sets up double 8 with a 171 and his 8th maximum in the 4th leg to checkout on double 16 and take a great victory, both players averaged over 100 per throw and the match had 118 scores of 100 and over including 8 maximums from each player.
