MICHAEL VAN GERWEN WORLD MATCHPLAY CHAMPION
By John Lowe, Jul 25 2016 07:10AM
Michael Van Gerwen retained his World Matchplay Title in Blackpool last night when he defeated Phil Taylor 18-10.
Taylor took the opening leg of the match and that was the last time he was in front, MVG was simply the better player by a big margin, he cooly and comfortably took Taylor apart, his average of 103 and his 12 maximums was impressive, but his 67% on the finishing doubles was the reason he won the match with so much to spare.
Taylor gave an appealing interview towards his fellow players saying "He Killed me, he bullied me, we have to do the same to him, I'm gutted, I'm shattered" I guess what goes around comes around, Taylor has been doing the same to his opponents for over a decade, MVG in his interview said "I think I won this title quite comfortably, I think I am the best " He is right on both counts, I have a feeling we are going to see more of the same in the coming months, if not years.
The World Matchplay is always a great event, the legs format make it good TV viewing and easy to understand, no one gets a chance to come back like they do in sets where the better player can sometimes go out of the tournament and yet have won more legs, Snooker retained the single frames format for decades to decide it's World Champion, maybe it's time for darts to revert it's show piece event, The World Championship to single leg format, if they don't they are in danger of seeing the World Matchplay, already rated by many the number 1 event on the calendar, the prize fund does not come close to the World Championship, but should that decide who the best player is ? I think not, It was the British Darts Organisation who changed the format from legs to sets after just 1 year of their championship, the PDC simply adopted their format probably assuming that was the accepted norm, I would love to see the PDC be bold, recognise how exciting the World Matchplay can be when players take the lead only to be caught, how tight many matches are and the 2 legs clear to decide the winner is needed, no one, spectator or player can say the winner of every match did not deserve to do so, Michael Van Gerwen said it all " I did not make any mistakes " he proved he is the best.
