PDC PLAYER OF THE YEAR AWARD SHARED
By John Lowe, Jan 23 2016 11:10AM
Gary Anderson and Michael Van Gerwen shared the player of the year award at the Dorchester in London, many will be delighted with this, others like myself will be surprised and a little delusioned by it, was the votes placed so close the 2 players could not be seperated, exactly equal, or was it a decision made by members of the PDC board, if so why ask people to vote ? I agree both players had a great year and both are worthy of the award, but in my opinion if a vote is put out it should be counted and the player with the most votes should be declared the winner. Footbalis FIFA Ballon dOr (Golden Ball) has seen Lionel Messi and Christian Ronaldo fight for the right to be the world's best players for the last 6 years, it would have been easy for FIFA to let them share the award on more than one occasion, but they didn't they had to stick to the vote even if it was decided by just 1, of course FIFA decide the world's best player by asking representative countries to place their vote, this limits the number, in the case of the PDC the votes where put out to everyone online, this would inevitably mean the player with the biggest fan base would win the vote, this has happened more than once with the BBC Sports Personalty Award, Ryan Giggs comes to mind here, If the PDC are going to chose their player of the year without a open vote, then it would be better to select a panel of people who are genuinely unbiased and knowledgable about the sport and the importance of each event, place their vote in a sealed envelope to be opened on Awards night, right or wrong there should only be one player of the year, hence the title given to it.
