PRO-DARTS TOUR BEGINS IN RUSSIA
By John Lowe, Mar 4 2015 09:15AM
In 1990 I was asked by my sponsors Unicorn Darts to visit Russia, the aim was to promote darts in every way first the playing side and then the sales of Unicorn darts products, it was a week long tour, the party conisted of myself Barry Twomlow and Michael Lowey, the sporting minister of Sovintersport was heavily involved in the setting up of the tour along with Jerry Presky who happened to be from Chesterfield before he went to live and work in Russia, I played live on TV for one hour demonstarting the method of throwing darts and letting a few press people play against me, we visited and played in the Balshio Ballet I was told I was the only Eastern person apart from Margaret Thatcher our Prime Minister who had graced that stage outside of Ballet performers, other visits included the Lada Car factory and the most immpresive the Kremlin, I can tell you they have a museum in there that is just unbelievable full of priceless artifacts many given by other countries. That was 25 years ago, I have been back since and played the Norwegian Dart champion on TV and playing a few exhibitions, whilst being optomistic that darts would develop into a big sport in Russia things did not seem to be happening very quickly but now a Russian EADC Pro-Tour is up and running and the future looks more promising as other tour events are planed throughout the year. Last weeks tour event saw Alexey Kadochnikov beat Maksim Belov 6-4 in the final, the event was held in the immpresive Omega Plaza in Moscow a far cry from 1990 when there was only one pub in the City, The Red Lion and not a dart board in sight, it's good to know that darts is begining to grow in Russia and more so that the Unicorn tour of 1990 probably set the seeds for today's growth.
Kadochnikov salutes the crowd on his win.
