TAYLOR - GERWEN FINAL IN BLACKPOOL
By John Lowe, Jul 24 2016 06:57AM
Reigning Champion Michael Van Gerwen will face 15 times World Matchplay Champion Phil Taylor in today's final in the Winter Gardens, Blackpool. The first semi-final last night was between Lewis and MVG, a 3 -0 lead was quickly established by MVG, Lewis responded and leveled 3-3, MVG then went on a 5 straight leg winning run, Lewis responded again winning 3 in row, but that's where it finished, MVG taking the next 5 legs and with it victory, 16-9, MVG averaged 101 and 49% on doubles, in his post match interview he made a point of saying he cannot understand why players try to slow him down, obviously refering to Lewis, and that he always plays the game fair and does nothing wrong, I have to agree, by using tactics that are not familiar to your own style only results in one thing, your mental thoughts are so busy concentrating on trying to stop the other player playing his normal game, they are not concentrating on the real task, in this case beating the best player on the Planet right now, which in itself is very hard indeed.
The second semi-final was a Taylor Master Class, he was almost back to his former years, his concentration for 80% of the match was fierce, Anderson tried to contain him without much luck, Taylor the winner by 16-8, his average matched MVG at 101, and a double finishing average of 50%.
Today's final should be a classic, the form of both players is very similar, will one player pull away early in the best of 35 legs match ? will MVG be the stronger of the 2 in the third quarter of the match ? will there be a 9 dart leg ? all probable, but not predictable, I am going to sit back and enjoy what I believe will be a Battle Royal in Blackpool.
