After the announcement of the new PDC Darts League and it's historic link with the BBC, i read that the BDO Players Championship has had to be canceled, the reason quite clear, no Television company wanted to screen it, I get the feeling we are whitnesing history repeating itself whithin the sport, in 1980 the National Darts Association of Great Britain lost control of the sport they had run for many years, the BDO had been formed and was up and running, they where more organised, more professional, and TV companies where queing up to screen thier events, the NDAGB literaly died, a shame in many ways, I was thier National Singles Champion, also News of the World Champion, which they ran, now 36 years later we have the same senario, the PDC are operating at a level never thought possible, with the BDO going backwards, TV companies are now queing to screen PDC events, as the new association with the BBC has proven, is this the final chapter in the demise of the BDO ? another shame, I have won almost all of thier events some more than once, is this then the time to let the PDC be the voice that negotiates the entry of darts into the Olympic Games, I say YES, I trust the BDO will recognise they are now a minority and give thier blessing to the PDC to approach the Olympic movement, after all we have the most powerful man in the top office in Lord Coe, what better time.

The Premier League has been jinxed for the second time, and it's only week 2, Gary Anderson missed week 1 in Leeds with a virus, now Robert Thornton has been laid low with a chest infection, James Wade drew the short straw and will play 2 matches tonight against Smith and Taylor, he will be hoping the results do not come out like smith's who had to play twice last week, losing both.

Matches:

Wade v Smith

Wright v MVG

Anderson v Chisnall

Lewis v Barney

Taylor v Wade

The PDC introduced a new tournament to the calendar yesterday, The Champions League of Darts, to be played in Cardiff on September 24/25, the top 8 players in the order of merit will contest the £100,000 first prize, to stop any confusion with the Premier League, the format will also be new, 2 groups of 4 players will play in a round robin format, the top 2 from each group going through to the knockout stage, it's not a surprise when the PDC announce an addition to the ever growing list of events, and £100,000 for the winner is fast becoming the norm, so what makes this event special ? It is being screened by the BBC ! Barbara Slater Director of BBC Sport made a statement in which she says: it will be a thrilling and innovative tournament, i like most others presume the BBC have finally recognised the PDC have the best players in the world taking part in thier events, and the tradition of the British Broadcasting Corporation has always been to show the best. A truly Stellar announcement and most probably the beginning of the beginning, whilst being the beginning of the end.

Gary Anderson will return to the Premier League this week in Newcastle after a nasty virus which kept him out of the opening night in Leeds and the UK Open qualiers in Wigan, his first match will be against Michael Van Gerwen who will be looking for his first win, Michael Smith who had to play 2 matches last week to make up for Anderson's absence will play Robert Thornton, Barney plays Wright, Lewis takes on Chisnall and Wade will play Taylor, after a cautious and yet surprising opening week in Leeds the battle for points will be intense, Smith will not want to lose 3 in a row, Thornton, whitewashed last week by Chisnall will be desperate to get at least a point, Taylor back to his best in Wigan will want to start his charge for top spot, and the 2 other matches are unpredictable, Anderson/MVG, Chisnall/Lewis, anyone capable of winning, both capable of being draws.

Phil Taylor beat Michael Van Gerwen in the UK Open Qualifier number 3 at Wigan yesterday, and he did it in style averaging 109 and 6 legs to 2, it was Taylor's first PDC ranking event win for almost 9 months, it was Taylor's second final in the 3 day event, he lost to Adrian Lewis on the first day, likewise it was MVG's second final having won on Saturday against Alan Norris.

Winners: Day 1 Adrian Lewis. Day 2 Michael Van Gerwen. Day 3 Phil Taylor.

Notable among others was Benito Van de Pas who reached the Quarter - Final on Friday, Top 16 on Saturday and the semi-final on Sunday.

Adrian Lewis hit top form in the UK Open Qualifier in Wigan his match winning made immpresive reading:

Lewis 6 Palfreyman 1

Lewis 6 Evetts 1

Lewis 6 King 0

Lewis 6 Norris 5

Lewis 6 Wright 1

Lewis 6 Taylor 2

No need to tell you there are some big names in there, only Norris gave him any trouble all day, Lewis averaged 110 in the final against The Power.

Other notables: MVG 4 Chisnall 6.

The 2016 Premier League kicked off at Leeds last night and it was a Cilla Black Surprise Surprise opening night, first the announcement that Gay Anderson the reigning champion was ill and could not appear, then MVG loses a 3-0 lead to lose 7-4 to James Wade, Barney almost brushes aside a out of form Taylor 7-2, Dave Chisnall fired on all cylinders to whitewash Robert Thornton 7-0, and to top the night Michael Smith loses to Peter Wright 7-2 and then 7-1 to Adrian Lewis after drawing the short straw to decide who would replace Anderson and play twice, Barney topped the averages with a very good 103, Chisnall close with 101, apart from that there was really nothing to get excited about, just 24 maximums, maybe we have become to expect so much, we cannot draw to much from week one there is a long way to go, but I am sure Michael Smith will be thinking he already has a hill to climb after his nervy start.

By John Lowe, Feb 1 2016 11:01AM

Michael Van Gerwen won the Unibet Masters for the second year in a row when he beat Dave Chisnall 11-6 in the final last night, the final may have seemed a lot easier than his semi-final match against Phil Taylor, who had an incredible 7 darts at doubles to win and make the final, Taylor did have to win a deciding leg against Peter Wright in his semi-final, MVG averaged 104 for the tournament and now looks set for a long season beginning with the Betway Premier League which starts Thursday from Leeds.

Players line up for the Premier League:

Michael Van Gerwen

Gary Anderson

Phil Taylor

Adrian Lewis

James Wade

Dave Chisnall

Peter Wright

Michael Smith

Robert Thornton

Raymond Van Barnaveldt

I expect fireworks from the start, the field is so good avergaes have to be high especially doubles averages, drawn matches will be a possibility mainly down to the fact once a players has reached 6 legs won a tendency to relax a little creeps in knowing a point is secure, will we see a 9 dart game in this seasons league? I would not be surprised if we whitness one in the opening round at Leeds, will Gary Anderson retain his title, will Taylor set the early pace, can Wright take his game to the next level, will Smith make his mark ?

I for one am looking forward to all the answers, SKY Sports 7pm Thursday 4th February.
