The averages went up a gear in the European Championship in Belgium yesterday, the players able to relax in the longer best of 19 legs put on a show of high scoring, 6 players hit 100 and more averages, the best being Taylor with 105 and then MVG with 106, but it was Peter Wright who added a 63% finishing average to his 102 scoring average that impressed the most, Wright beat Kim Huybrechts in a tight match 10-8 with just one break of throw the difference to take a thrilling match. Big John Henderson beat Rody John Rodrigues 10-2 in the days opening match, Lewis beat Pipe 10-5, Anderson not yet at his best beat Whitlock 10-8, Taylor coasted to victory over Smith 10-5 and MVG followed, determined not to be outclassed with a 10-3 win over Cristo Reyes, Klaasen played Wade last on and won convincingly 10-5.

Today will see the conclusion of the championship which promises to be more high scoring but I feel sure will come down to who can hit those finishes big or small.

The Unibet European Championships got underway in Belgium yesterday, with some tough first round pairings and some close results, Lewis edged out Benito Van de Pas 6-5, Chisnall did the same to in form Sujovic and needed 6 maximums to do it, Smith beat improving Welsh player Geryn Price 6-4 and big John Henderson took out recent Major winner Thornton 6-4.

Michael Van Gerwen coasted to a 6-3 win over de Zwaan, Taylor put on a power dispaly to beat Van der Voort 6-1, Wade beat Jenkins 6-3, World Champion Anderson knocked out Irishman Dolan 6-3, Bunting edged out White 6--5 and in form Peter Write beat Norris 6-3.

Pick of thge second round matches all nest of 19 legs are:

Taylor v Smith. Wade v Klaasen. Chisnall v Bunting. Taylor will want to settle the score against Smith who knocked him out of the World Championship, Wade will have to be at his best to take out the fast throwing Klaasen and Chisnell will want to make a point against Bunting who somehow manged to play the overseas invited events even though ranked lower in the merit table, it all adds up to good viewing.

The price one of these fine players will pay for not competing regularaly in the Players Pro Tour events over the last year will be going out of the Cash Convertor Players Championship at Minehead in November at the first hurdle, the 2 players ranked 2 Anderson and 3 Taylor in the World Rankings but 12 and 21 in the Pro-Tour Rankings will surely be a little dismayed at the prospect of not advancing in this £300,000 event, it could also make a difference in the world ranking ranking should Taylor go out first round, Peter Write is ready to leapfrog him into 3rd place with only a few thousand pounds separating them, this situation as not happened before but it was only a matter of time when players decide to give some of the weekend events a miss, this is the last tournament before the World Championship and last years win for Anderson was a great platform for his Ally Pally success, I wonder if it will be the same this year or will it be a set back if he goes out so early.

Unicorn have introduced my 21gr Golden Titanium Signature Darts in the Purist Range, they are available in Barrels only which makes it easier for you to build your own model, I personally designed this Barrel many years ago and have thrown millions of darts with it, winning over 1000 titles world wide including 3 World Championships and the first ever 9 dart game on TV in the history of the sport, there are plenty of copies around, some with cosmetic niceties that push the price through the ceiling, some with an extra groove so the name can be changed, but the truth is there is only one John Lowe Signature Dart and it's made by Unicorn, you can purchase at the online shop at www.john-lowe.com every order will include a personally signed photograph 11" x 8" worth £8.

My throwing action is credited by many professionals in the sport including Phil Taylor to be the very best, the smooth action couled to the comfortable stance has maintained the test of time, Darts Incidents and Moments have put together a short video of my throwing action in Major TV events from 1978 through 2008, Yes, 30 years of action, I have put a link to the video at the top of this page on the right, if you want to look at the throw in more deatil then record the video and play in slo motion mode, you will notice the only change is probably the speed which I throw the darts particularly against Phil Taylor, I do not do that to try and speed the other player up, Phil for instance is not a slow player in any way, I do it because I feel more comfortable following certain players if I throw faster, likewise I am comfortable if I find /i need to throw slower, the 9 dart agem for me was one leg of pure 100% concentration, I don't think it possible to maintain that level throughout a whole match, that's why it's important to have a throwing action that still operates at a high level of consistency when your concentration dips. I am pleased to be able to share my action with you thanks to Darts Incidents and Momentsand trust you may find something that will improve your throw.

Kim Huybrechts beat Peter Wright by 6 legs to 5 to win the European Grand Prix, Huybrechts was 5-2 down and at that stage looked to be finished but he dug in and won one leg at a time to level at 5-5 and then threw the one good leg needed to secure the victory, a great dispaly by the Belgium ace.

Earlier matches produced good darts and close games, Wright beating Ian White 6-5 and Mensur Soljovic 6-5, Huybrechts beating Michael smith 6-5 and James Wade 6-4.

The next major tournament is the Grand Slam from Wolverhapton.

It was around 2-45pm, the Fulcrom Centre in Slough was packed, it was the MFI World Matchplay Darts quarter final, the match between Keith Deller and myself had not been going long, both of us were in fine form and I expected a tough match from Keith, I had settled in and was feeling good with my throw and the throw itself, I was looking for the chance to break the throw and take a lead, I didn't have any other thoughts in my mind, then a little magic happened, my first dart landed in the T20 the second followed by it's side and the third hit the same target "One Hundred and Eighty" rang out from Freddy Williams our caller, my second throw was identical and another "One Hundred and Eighty" echoed around the Fulcrum, it was now I thought of all the times I had prepared for this moment I was left with 141, my turn came and I started with the first dart right in the T17 leaving 90, my second dart in the T18, leaving D18, the third and most important left my hand and before it hit the target my arm was raised in celebration, the first ever 9 dart game of 501 on Television had been achieved, the whole audience stood and appluaded for what seemed like hours, it is 31 years ago today and I remember it like it was yesterday, it was a life changing moment for John Lowe and a history making day for the Sport of Darts, to watch click on the 9 dart link.

"Old Stoneface" yes, that's me, not sure who gave me that name but more than probable one of my opponents I had just beaten and he had noticed I had not broken a smile or wrinkled my forehead throughout the match, concentration being top of my list of priorities, in the early days of TV they did not stay for the presentation so they misseed out on the big grin even a smile when I was presented with the winning trophy and the all important cheque, Stoneface was acceptable but Old was not really in 1980, I guess I have grown into it and now when I consider myself old-ish it's easy to accept. Today's top darts players earn a fantastic living from the sport, anyone in the top 60 will have at least £100,000 prize money creditied to their name, when you add sponsorship from as many as five allowed by the PDC the income starts to go up considerably and so the fee's charged for appearances also reflect on a players capable earnings, I know of two players who ask for £8,000 for a exhibition and some who have never won a major title asking for £2,000 plus, when you add the cost of a MC and staging the fee can be double. Darts is so popular now that people want to see their favourite players in person in their City or Town and that' can only be good for the sport, promoting it at all levels particularaly spectator level. I am still enjoying playing exhibitions, I still refer to them as challenges, I could not turn up at an exhibition and throw darts that would be humiliating to myself and the people watching, when that happens I would know it's time to dissapear gracefully, I expect to lose a match or two, the standard of today's players even at lower levels and with the throw given to them make that more than a possibility, but I am there to play, to compete and to offer the challenge of playing against a three times world champion, after the darts I have plenty of stories from Leighton Rees in the 70's to Phil Taylor in the present time, in fact over 40 years of life on the Oche and many stories off it, my night of darts that inculudes 16 matches of 501 followed by 20 minutes of my life on the microphone will not cost you thousands, I do not charge a set fee but one that is tailored to suit your location and the size of the venue, non to large non to small, Interested ? then contact me at jloweprodart@aol.com availability from January 2016 onward.
