Robert Thornton beat Michael Van Gerwen in the final of the Party Poker Grand Prix of Darts in Dublin last night by 5 sets to 4 in what is being hailed the greatest final of the tournament and one of the greatest finals on TV ever. The Maximum scoring of Van Gerwen was breathtaking scoring 18 x 180 in the 35 legs played in the final, Thornton produced 9 maximums himself but also 25 x 140, the standard of play from both players was remarkable both responding when needed, but it was MVG who missed decisive doubles at the end of the match when victory looked almost certain to be his, Thornton pounced on any chance open to him to seal his biggest ever win on the PDC circuit, It may have been 5 - 4 to Thornton but the legs tally went to MVG by 20 legs to 15. The story once again in the double in double out tournament was the finishing averages, MVG 32% Thornton 46%, and there we leave it for another year with a worthy champion Robert Thornton.

The Party Poker Grand Prix of Darts final will be between Robert Thornton and Michael Van Gerwen after they both won their semi-final matches last night, Thornton beat Mensur Soljvic by 4 sets to 2 with a 90.03 average, but the telling factor in the match was the 11 maximums hit by Thornton to Soljovic's 0, it was a powerful display by Thornton that signals to MVG that he had better be at his best to stop the Scotman taking his title. MVG beat Mark Webster by 4 sets to 1, the match was fairly close over the 5 sets played but MVG's 56% on the finishing doubles told the story in full. Tonight's final should on the form of both players be close, but we have witnessed many surprises during the weeks play, if there is one tonight it could be Thornton beating Mighty Mike.

Mesur Soljovic produced the finest comeback at the Darts Grand Prix in Dublin of the tournament, playing against Vincent Van Der Voort he fond himself 1 set down and 2 legs down, he then found his form of previous games and won 9 straight legs to take the match, it was clear from the start Mensur had a game plan, he had to combat the super fast throwing of Van Der voort, he was clam and very steady, he would not be rushed but in honesty did not play that slow, Vincent was clearly out of his comfort zone and after rushing so many double attempts completey capitulated, Mesur gave us the biggest celebration we have seen for many years, jumping around the stage arms high in the air, fists cleched and the biggest of smiles, it seemed to go on and on, it was clear this meant so much to him after all the efforts over the past few years he has given to reach a major semi-final, can he go all the way ? we know one thing for sure he will give his best and should he make the final we will need an extra 10 minutes coverage from SKY for the celebration that is bound to follow.

Robert Thornton beat Ian white in a very close match 3-2, Mark Webster overcame a touch of nerves to regain his control and win the deciding leg against Jelle Klaasen 3-2, MVG beat Jamie Lewis 3-0 and looked to be coasting, the bookies have hin odds on to retain his title.

Ian White and Gary Anderson put on a show of power play at the Grand Prix in Dublin's City West Arena, between them they managed to score 19 maximums in the match, white won the match by 3 sets to 1 but the the contest was far closer, both players averaged 97 + per throw and with a double start format that is of high quality, Anderson hit 11 Maximims to White's 8, the telling difference was: White 56% starting doubles, Anderson 48%, White 42% finishing doubles, Anderson 38%, the match was a pleasure to watch and a credit to the standard of play by two fine players, there had to be a winner and White was worthy of that.

Vincent Van Der Voort carried on his fine form with a 3-0 win over Terry Jenkins, Mansur Soljovic also marched into the next round with a 3-0 win over Simon Whitlock and Robert Thornton completed the 3-0 scorelines with a win over Justin Pipe.

Yesterday I said I didn't expect anymore shocks at the Grand Prix of Darts in Dublin, well just 24 hours later I have to eat my words, Adrian Lewis loses 3-0 to Mark Webster and a leg difference of 2-9, a great result for Webster who is playing good darts, his 55% double on and 43% double out tells the story, but still somewhat a shock to see a player of Lewis's capability go out so tameley. Michael van Gerwen found himself a set down to Kim Huybrechts but came back superbly to win 3-1. Jelle Klasen knocked many peoples favourite for this event Dave Chisnall out 3-2 and Jamie Lewis beat Michael Smith by the same score. The night however belonged to Mark Webster and on this form he may be the one they have to beat.

Phil Taylor was dumped out of the Party Poker Grand Prix in dublin last night by Vincent Van Der Voort in straight sets, it was a big shock for Taylor and his fans not least because he had a dart at the Bullseye to hit a perfect 9 dart leg. James Wade was also sent packing by Mensur Soljovic 2 sets to 1, Suljovic winning 6 straight legs to complete his win. Other notable losers: Beaten, Caven, Henderson and King, Whitlock, Pipe, Anderson, Thornton, White and Jenkins all made it saftely to round 2 which begins today, I don't expect any more shock exitis from now on, all the players left are capable of winning and more so if they don't hit their starting double, capable of losing, there will certainly be more Double Trouble to come.

The World Grand Prix of Darts started at City West Dublin last night, the only tournament that starts all matches with a double in and a double out and for many that means double trouble ! many players claim they like the format but deep down they dread it, averages of 100 plus drop to 80, some as low as 70, only the payers who consistently hit their doubles and most importantly their starting doubles will remain in the event, it shoud not be that difficult but the truth is many players do not practise enough on doubles, they prefer to hit the trebles all day long and hope they are so far in front in the leg they will have more than three darts to finish. The opening round produced the usual shocks, Barney lost 2-0 to Adrian Lewis, Bunting out to Webster 2-1, Wright out to Chisnal 2-1 and Michael Van Gerwen made to fight for surviival againsy Keegan Brown who recovered from a first set whitewash to take the match all the way, the rest of the first round continues tonight and no one is safe and sure they will make it through to the second round, expect more shocks in the tournament renamed by many DOUBLE TROUBLE.
