James Wade will play Phil Taylor at the Blackpool Winnter Gardens in one of tonights semi-finals of the World Matchplay, Wade ended Mensur Suljovic's beilliant run in the championship 16 legs to 11, Wade was only behind once at 1-2 and although he played well you could sense he did not have the composure he had againsy Jenkins and Anderson, Wade was clinical and deserved his win.

Taylor was expected to have a tough match against Chisnall but it didn't happen, Taylor was in charge throughout and his finishing which was in doubt in previous matches was suyperb averaging 48%, both players had a throwing average of 102 but Chisnall will be a little disappointed with the 16-8 result.

Tonights's semi-finals:

Michael Van Gerwen v Peter Wright

Phil Taylor v James Wade

By John Lowe, Jul 24 2015 07:28AM

The first quarter finals of the World Matchplay in Blackpool produced a barrage of Maximums, 34 in total, the first match between Peter Wright and Gerwyn Price went to Wright 16-7, ex Rugby Player turned Dart Player Price could not find the form that knocked Adrian Lewis out in the previous round, he was visibly struggling against a very confident Wright who had a finishing average of 48%, both players hit 6 Maximums to the delight of the packed audience.

The second match between Michael Van Gerwen and Ian Wright was a thriller in every sense, White went into a 3-0 lead and extended it to 1-6, MVG stepped up a gear knowing if he didn't he would be on his way out of the tournament, the match leveled at 8-8, White set of again and opened a 2 leg lead 10-8, MVG responded and leveled once more 10-10, with his sights set on a semi-final place MVG takes the lead going 2 legs clear 12-10, White pulls him back and levels at 12-12, the audience are on their feet at this time, at 14-13 to MVG white misses D18 for a 108 checkout Gerwen hits D16 to move one leg away from victory, the saga didn't end there White surprisingly missed 7 darts at the double to level once more, MVG hits D20 and the match however close was his, this was a match worthy of the final, a total of 121 scores of 100 and over including 22 Maximums and 10 breaks of throw, a match to rank with any that has gone before.

Mensur Soljovic put Gary Anderson out of the World Matchplay in Blackpool last night in the top 16, the Austrian had his own game plan and he executed it brilliantly, his 13-9 win included 37 x 100 16 x 140 4 x 180 and a check out average of 31%, that was 14 more ton pluses than Anderson, add 5 breaks of throw and a little take your time tactics, all legal, and you have the story of how the World Champion was beaten.

Phil Taylor beat Andy Hamilton 13-6 in a match where Taylor did enough and no more, James Wade beat Brendan dolan 13-8 and looked comfortable especially in the doubles department with an average of 48% checkout. Dave Chisnall knew he had to play well to beat rising start Keegan Brown, it was a close match that was level at 8-8 but Brown could not find the break of throw to go ahead and Chisnall closed out at 13-11.

Plenty of good dart in day 5 at the Winter Gardens but the night will be remembered the night Mensur Soljovic defeated the World and Premier League Champion.

Phil Taylor began his defence of the World Matchplay in Blackpool last night, his opponent John Henderson mus have thought why me? Taylor brushed him aside with a 10-2 win in short time with an average of 1090, Taylor said in his post match interview he had been in Blackpool for 10 days now, so one things for sure he is well prepared and ready for anything anyone can throw against him. Young Keegan Brown was jubilant in his win over Robert Thornton 10-7, Jamie Caven took Dave Chisnall to 11-11 before Chisnall took the next 2 legs to win, Chisnall hit 13 maximums but to be honest matched them with many low scores, he is the master of the maximums but needs to tighten up the rest of his scoring if he is going to be a serious threat. Raymond Van Barnaveldt was put out by Andi Hamilton 10-7, Hamilton averaged 95 Barney justb 89 and that says it all.

Day2 of the World Matchplay was memorable for the wrong reasons for some of the big names, King, Bunting, Pipe, Smith, Jenkins, Beaten, all out at the first hurdle, King lost to up and coming Andrew Gilding 10-8, Bunting to Ian white 10-6, P{ipe crashed out to Jamie Lewis, Michael Bully boy smith was bullied out by Gerwyn Price 10-4, Terry Jenkins was beaten by a very determind Mensur Soljovic, and Beaten lost not surprisingly to the reigning World Champion Gary anderson 10-4. Brenden Dolan put up a good fight against Vincent Van der Voort winning 10-6, Vincent never really finding his speed throwing which has served him well for so long, the match of the day if not the tournament so far was between James Wade and the Australian Kyle Anderson, Wade won 10-7 but it wasn't easy, far from it, Anderson pressured him all the way hitting 9 maximums and a 100 average, Wade threw a brilliant 11 dart leg to seal victory knowing one slip and Anderson would have been right back in the match, Wade brought his best game to the match and made his intent known to the other players, on this form he may be the player to beat.

The World Matchplay started at The Winter Gardens Blackpool last night, the £450 tournament wilol be highly contested with many players in the best form of their lefe, Peter Wright showed his ever improving form with a 10-5 win over Kim Huybrecths averaging 108 per throw. Simon Whitlock beat Jelle Klaasen 10-4 confirming he is returning to his form of old, Michael Van Gerwen beat fellow Dutchman Benito Van De Pas 10-4 with a reasonable performance by his standards, Adrian Lewis defeated Joe Murman in a match that Lewis was winning comfortably only to see Joe Haul himself back into contention at 7-6, Lewis hung on to win 10-7. The Winter Garden was packed to the rafters and I am told it will be the same all week as many spectators take their annual holidays at one of the countries most popular resorts, the opening night belonged to Wright who set the standard for the rest to follow which I am sure they will do, we have not had a 9 dart game on TV for quite a while, the format of this tournament suggest the wait will almost surely be over.

The World Matchplay gets underway tomorrow at the Winter Gardens Blackpool, the event ranked by many players the best in the World, mainly because the venue creates a fantastic atmosphere and the format which is legs won and not sets, I don't have to remind anyone how winning a match with the set system can be very frustrating, for instance a player can lose amatch by 3 sets to 1 and still have won 1 more leg, i.e. 3-0 2-3 2-3. Thje Matchplay is won round by round by the player who reaches the number of legs required first. michael Van Gerwen will be bidding not only to win the title but take his current ranking winnings over the 1 Million pound mark, a great milestone in the sport, Gary Anderson will be aware he needs just £251 more in winnings than Phil Taylor to overtake him and go number 2 in the World, so there is a lot to play for, can Taylor make it 8 in a row ? can MVG add another title to his ever growing list, will Lewis hit top form, is it Chizzies year? all questions that will be answered in just over a weeks time.

The response for my Autobiography "Old Stoneface" has been good, I still have a few copies left and the publishers have told me they will do another print if required, I do want to point out to International buyers, if you buy 4 copies the p&p is reduced considerably, for instance 4 copies to the USA will give a saving of £12, I would have to check shipping for other countries.
